Biography

Cleopatra VII Philopator was the last active ruler of the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt. Born to King Ptolemy XII Auletes, she was a member of the Ptolemaic dynasty, a family of Macedonian Greek origin. She became co-ruler at age 14 alongside her 10-year-old brother Ptolemy XIII. Cleopatra is celebrated for her intelligence, political astuteness, and charisma. She was highly educated, speaking nine languages, and versed in philosophy, mathematics, and astronomy. Her reign was marked by her efforts to protect Egypt's independence and power through strategic alliances with Rome, most famously with Julius Caesar and later Mark Antony. Despite popular portrayal focusing on her beauty and romantic liaisons, Cleopatra was a shrewd ruler who successfully maintained Egyptian autonomy for nearly two decades during a period of increasing Roman power. Following the defeat of her forces by Octavian (later Augustus) at the Battle of Actium, and Mark Antony's subsequent suicide, Cleopatra took her own life, reportedly by allowing an asp (venomous snake) to bite her.
